Nurturing Lives: Postnatal to Paediatrics
This year, we turn our focus to the earliest stage of life.
From the womb to the cradle, pharmacists play an essential role in supporting healthy growth and development. We guide new mothers, ensure breastfeeding safety, advise on appropriate medication use, support nutrition and growth milestones, and provide reassurance to families.
Together, let’s empower healthier beginnings and nurture brighter futures from postnatal to paediatrics.

HELP! Series: Hands-On Learning in Breastfeeding, Paediatrics First Aids & Counselling
The Penang Pharmacists Symposium 2025 featured four insightful workshops under the ‘HELP!’ series, emphasizing key areas in breastfeeding, paediatric first aid, and effective counselling approaches for children.

One of the sessions was led by Dr. Grace Tay Yue Wen, Lactation Consultant at Gloria Care Centre, who conducted a workshop with the title of “Help! How Do I Make More Milk?”. Throughout the session, Dr. Grace provided an in-depth overview of breast milk production principles, the safe use of lactation aids and galactagogues as well as holistic strategies to promote a positive and empowering breastfeeding experience for mothers.

Following that, we were honoured to have Ms. Charmaine Lim, Registered Nurse and Lactation Consultant from Gloria Care Centre, who leds a hands-on workshop titled “Help! I’m Having Stony Breasts!”. During the session, Ms. Charmaine shared her expertise in managing mastitis. She also discussed the proper use of both conventional and wearable breast pumps, while demonstrating effective breast massage and hand expression techniques to support mothers throughout their breastfeeding journey.

Beyond breastfeeding, the subsequent workshop focused on the theme of paediatric first aid with a session titled “Help! Please Save My Little One!”, conducted by Dr. Sia Wen Li, Emergency Physician at Hospital Sungai Bakap. Dr. Sia guided participants on the importance of early recognition and prompt management of infant choking, as well as essential paediatric CPR techniques during medical emergencies. Participants also had the valuable opportunity to engage in hands-on practice using baby manikins, enhancing their skills and confidence in managing critical situations.

The workshop series concluded with an engaging counselling session led by Ms. Christine Foo Ai Ing and Ms. Nasira Binti Mohamed Ayub, Paediatric Clinical Pharmacists from Penang General Hospital with the title of “Help! Am I Counseling Correctly?”. Ms. Christine and Ms. Nasira shared valuable insights on the principles and proper techniques for using nasal douches, nasal sprays and various inhaled asthma devices which commonly prescribed for children. Participants gained a better understanding on correct medication administration and effective patient education methods, which are essential for promoting adherence to therapy among paediatric patients.
